In June 2026, Mozambique officially solidified its position as South Africa’s single largest international tourist feeder market, driving a significant portion of the country’s overnight visitor arrivals.

According to the latest data, this surge persists despite recent socio-political challenges, as thousands of regional travellers cross the border daily for holiday and personal reasons, highlighting the deep-seated economic and social ties between the two nations.

As revealed by Statistics South Africa in its monthly international tourism report, South Africa welcomed 823 365 overnight tourists in June 2026. Out of this total, Southern African Development Community (SADC) nations contributed an overwhelming 81.2% (668 770), with Mozambique leading the pack at 216 355 arrivals.

This represents an explosive 32.8% year-on-year increase from the 162 900 tourists recorded in June 2025.

Regional travellers from the neighbouring country predominantly use road transport – which accounts for 93.6% of SADC tourist arrivals – with the Lebombo border port registering a massive 222 262 tourist entries during the month.

Additionally, border terminal operators at the Baixa and Junta terminals in Maputo have reported a daily rise in 15-seater vehicle departures heading to South Africa from Mozambique, proving that transport demand remains exceptionally robust.

This movement continues despite recent anti-immigrant marches in South Africa. Transport operators confirmed that some citizens who previously left are now returning. Beyond local travel, the coastal country has increasingly become a key transit route for other African migrants returning home.

Graça Machel calls for regional investment

Addressing these regional migration dynamics recently, former Mozambican and South African First Lady Graça Machel emphasised that the SADC must play a more active role in the region.

Speaking on regional pressures, Machel stated that greater investment in agriculture is essential to tackle hunger and reduce the socio-economic pressures that ultimately drive migration.

While overseas markets like Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom dominate long-distance arrivals, regional holiday-makers remain the backbone of the industry. Interestingly, this regional tourist contingent is heavily skewed by sex, with men comprising 60.2% of SADC arrivals.

Holiday remains the primary purpose of visit, accounting for 97.3% of all tourists entering South Africa.
